It entered service with the RAF in 2003 and remains the backbone of British air defence, operated by 6 frontline squadrons.
The Typhoon is designed primarily for air superiority — defeating enemy aircraft in combat — but is also highly capable in the ground attack role with precision-guided weapons. It is routinely deployed on Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) duties, scrambling from RAF Coningsby and RAF Lossiemouth to intercept unidentified aircraft entering UK airspace.
The Typhoon has one of the most distinctive silhouettes of any aircraft. The canard-delta configuration means it has two small foreplanes (canards) near the nose and a large delta wing at the rear — no conventional horizontal tail. This gives it a triangular, arrowhead appearance from below.
At low altitude the twin Eurojet EJ200 engines produce a distinctive high-pitched roar quite different from civil aircraft. The aircraft is highly agile and may be seen in steep climbs or sharp turns during training sorties. The grey camouflage scheme blends against cloudy skies but the distinctive shape is unmistakable at close range.
