Launched in 2010 and entering service in 2016, it offers operators a choice of two new-generation engines — the CFM LEAP-1A or Pratt & Whitney PW1100G geared turbofan — delivering dramatic improvements in fuel burn and noise.
The A320neo family has accumulated the largest order backlog in commercial aviation history, with over 7,000 orders from more than 100 airlines worldwide. It's become the default choice for any airline renewing or expanding its narrowbody fleet, and you'll see it on routes from 30 minutes to 7 hours in length.
The A320neo looks almost identical to the original A320 from a distance, but up close the engines are the giveaway. The CFM LEAP engine has a distinctive serrated exhaust nozzle (chevrons) that zigzag around the back of the engine to reduce noise. The PW1100G variant has a slightly different shape with a larger fan diameter.
Like all A320 family aircraft, look for the characteristic wingtip sharklets — large, curved upward-sweeping wingtips that are more pronounced than the older winglets. The fuselage is circular in cross-section, giving the aircraft a smooth, rounded belly when viewed from below on approach.
