About This Aircraft

The Airbus A321 is the stretched variant of the A320, with the fuselage extended by 6.93 metres to accommodate up to 220 passengers. It entered service in 1994 and quickly became popular with airlines needing extra capacity on high-demand short to medium-haul routes.

Despite being superseded by the A321neo on new orders, thousands of original A321s remain in active service worldwide. Lufthansa, American Airlines, and Turkish Airlines operate large fleets on routes ranging from busy domestic shuttles to medium-haul international services.

How to Spot It

The A321 is the longest of the original A320 family — the fuselage is visibly stretched compared to an A320, giving it a sleek, elongated appearance in the air. If you see an A320 family aircraft and the fuselage looks unusually long relative to the wing, you are probably looking at an A321.

In the air the A321 has the same wing and engines as the A320. The length is the key distinguisher — particularly visible on approach when the aircraft is lower and slower.

• The A321 was the first member of the A320 family to be assembled outside France — Airbus opened a second final assembly line in Hamburg specifically for A321 production.
• American Airlines operates one of the world's largest A321 fleets, using it as its primary domestic narrowbody on high-demand routes like New York to Los Angeles.
• The A321 requires additional structural reinforcement compared to the A320 to handle the increased loads from the stretched fuselage — despite looking similar, it shares only about 80 percent of structural parts.
• Lufthansa has used the A321 on transatlantic thin routes in a special two-class configuration, capitalising on its range to serve city pairs that do not justify a widebody aircraft.
